Disney/Pixar have officially announced Toy Story 4 will be released in cinemas in June 2017.

John Lasseter is returning for the fourth instalment, Disney chairman Bob Iger announced, after directing the first Toy Story Movie and co creating Toy Story 2, Lasseter will be back in the directors chair.

It is not yet known if voice actors Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will be returning for the sequel. With the Storyline also be kept a closely guarded secret.

The last film in the series – Toy Story 3 – was released in the summer of 2010, and made nearly $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office.

The official blurb  confirms that the new film “opens a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the Toy Story gang”. The new story has come from John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, described not incorrectly as ‘the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three Toy Story films’.

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before.

“Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it.

“It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie – and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Disney debuted a one-off Halloween special titled Toy Story of Terror! last year.

ABC in the US and Sky Movies in the UK will next air the Christmas special Toy Story That Time Forgot in December, with Hanks, Allen and Kristen Schaal reprising their roles.

Toy Story That Time Forgot centres on Trixie having to lead her friends back to Bonnie’s room when they come under attack from action figures.

The Toy Story franchise has made more than $1.9 billion at the box office since Woody and Buzz first appeared back in 1995.
