Co-executive producer Denise Huth explained that the season is focusing on “exploring humanity” and the strength of human spirit.

Huth said: “The second half of the season is dark and it’s sad, but when you’re looking at these things and you’re exploring humanity and the choices of why do you choose to live, when it seems like you shouldn’t and yet inevitably it’s that human spirit that keeps you going.”

Executive producer Scott M Gimple also teased that there will be “some very emotional moments” within the second run of season five.

He said: “Back eight has a very interesting structure, there are some very emotional moments, there are some very crazy moments and there’s a huge change for the situation of these characters.”

Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes in the drama, said that from what he knows so far – the season has made The Walking Dead feel like “a new show”.

“The scripts that I’ve read and what we’ve been filming so far, it feels like we’re moving into a new show,” he said. “It just feels like a new place visually and also storywise.

“It’s very hard not to be brutalised by this world, but there is a sense in Rick that he’s going to pull people through.”
