In an interview with the Telegraph Martin Freeman spoke about Sherlock returning for a 2015 Christmas Special.

When the actor who plays John Watson in the BBC drama, spoke to the telegraph he stated that filming would begin again next year commenting,

“If that’s going to be [for] a special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas,” he said. “A Christmas special – that’s what I understand.”

He also spoke about Amanda Abbington who plays his wife in the cult series and that at present she is set to continue playing his wife “for the foreseeable future”.

“While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did,” he added. “So he gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die.”

Freeman also commented recently that at present he is happy to stay with the program for the foreseeable future, saying

“I wouldn’t and couldn’t put an end point on it – I’m just more open to it.”

Sherlock co-creator, writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said: “A special, plus a new series of three episodes – it’s a record-breaking run”

“Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John is the very last thing you’d expect.”

Back in April Creator Mark Gatiss stated that a full fourth series was still on the table, but it was all about ensuring that both Cumberbath and Freeman diaries were free.

It seems now that the diaries have been cleared with the Christmas special to begin shooting in January 2015 and series 4 to being shooting later in the year.

Mark Gatiss added: “Series four! At last ! It’s always special to return to Sherlock but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing… a special! Not only that, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before.”

The official plot synopsis is: “After the briefest of exiles, Sherlock will return to face one of his biggest mysteries yet… why is Moriarty’s face being broadcast on every television in the land?”
