After Pacific Rim pulled in over $400 million last year it has been on the cards that Del Toro would look to make a sequel.

Whilst promoting his new TV mini series Strain, del Toro confirmed in an  interview with Buzzfeed, that Charlie Hunnams will get to reprise his role as  Rayleigh Becket.

“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn,” del Toro explained “We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”

Although at present no studio is linked to the project and therefore finacing is not in place, del Toro did say that they are writing the screenplay  “like it is happening”

He also put an end to speculation that any further film would be a prequel by stating,

“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion,” del Toro said. “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

The questions is when will del Toro actually have the time to direct another movie, as Legendary pictures have said in the past they would only consider moving forward with a Pacific Rim project it del Toro was on board to direct.

At present he is currently working on the Horror film Crimson Peak, along with a whole list of other films currently in development including Hellboy 3, Dr Kekyll and Mr Hyde and a darker version of the classic children’s fairy tale Pinocchio.
