Sony and Marvel have been discussing this for some time, but it has now bee officially confirmed that Spiderman will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The rumour mill has been going into over drive on this story will they join or wont they, and after the recent change in management at Sony further stories were released leading to further speculation over Spidey future.

But a deal has been struck and the Marvel and Sony agreement will see Spiderman enter the Marvel cinematic Universe at the control of Marvel prior to July 2017, this will then set up Sony to release a rebooted solo outing for their Spiderman franchise with a release date confirmed as July 28th 2017.

The official statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios was,

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie. Amy has been deeply involved in the realisation on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years”.]

It has been confirmed that Andrew Garfield will not return to the role as Peter Parker, and that a search for a new webslinging hero will begin.  At present its unclear whether Sony will move forward with the sinister Six movie or the planned Venom movie, but we would certainly suggest not to expect them any time soon.

The addition of Spiderman to the Marvel Universe has meant some changes to other movies, the first change will see  THOR: Ragnarok, which was initially down for a June 2017 release moved intot he slot of Black Panters November 3rd 2017 slot.  This has then had a knock on effect to the other movies with Black Panter taking Captain Marvels slot of June 6th and the Captain Marvel movie moving to November 2nd 2018 and Inhumans moved to July 12th 2019.

The good news it the Avengers Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2 will keep both their original dates.

As to what movie Spiderman will appear in prior to it July 2017 debut into a new solo movie, the options are limited with either Captain America : winter Soldier and Doctor Strange.  Our best guess would be that we would expect to see Spidey in the next Captain America installment as the storyline is already turning into a mini Avengers movie with the introduction of Black Panter, Anthony Mackie returning as Falcon, Scarlett Johnson as Black Widow and of course Robert downy Jr as Iron Man.
