Psychological thriller Fortitude is currently airing on Sky Atlantic receiving 1.5 million viewers on its opening episode, but is it doing enough to see a season 2.

The Sky Atlantic drama with an all-star cast and costing around £25 million for the channel to make, is receiving both critical success and viewing success. With Michael Gambon, Stanley Tucci, Christopher Eccleston and Jessica Raine all heading up the cast their is very little surprise that the series has attracted so much attention.

The series plot has been and still is being kept under wraps with star Chipo Chung who plays Trish Stoddart in the series stating, “I don’t actually know what happens in the end,” the actress admitted. “I’m as intrigued as the next person.”

When Chung was recently interviewed she spoke about the possibility of a season 2 supporting it by stating,

“I think it could go on,” she said. “I think it’s a fascinating subject: How much strength do you have to deal with this landscape, or to deal with the circumstances within this landscape?

“I don’t think people have seen this world before on television, and there’s so many fascinating characters. I think the town is a land of mystery; it’s sort of unfathomable so I think it will go on.”

The thing with these types of shows is that the audience is so heavily sucked in to the first series, from where the plot lines are kept so tightly under wraps, the audience comes to expect the same feeling season after season. Broadchurch is a another shows that saw the first season have huge critical success, with the audience growing and then growing further via VOD.

The problem that sometimes comes from a season 2 in these types of shows is that the expectations is set so high, that audiences feel let down. The current second season of Broadchurch is a series that has a lot going for it, with great story telling and still the suspense of not knowing, yet the bar was set so high during the first season that viewing figures feel by around 2 million viewers after the first episode.

With Rotten Tomatos currently giving Fortitude a 90% approval rating on their TOMATOMETER, and the series currently being picked up in the US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, we feel its likely that Fortitude will return for a season 2.

Of course as soon as Sky Atlantic confirm the renewal, we will be sure to let you know.
