My Gezza takes a look at exactly how much Marvel Studios has made from their characters since 2008, this does not include Marvel X- Men Franchise as this is owned by Fox. Spiderman only entered the Marvel Universe fold from 2015 so earlier films are not included.

Last year saw Guardians of the Galaxy  take the crown from  ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’, for being the most pre booked cinematic release in August ever, with Avenger Age of Ultron taking the crown as the biggest selling opening weekend in April ever, but how much money have they actually made from all of this.

Back in the 90’s Marvel sold of the rights to a lot of the characters, but very little was seen of Marvel characters on the big screen, universal had released 2 Hulk movies which both didn’t do  quite as well as expected by the studio, and therefore the rights to the franchise reverted back to Marvel Studio again.

With Marvel now having the full Avengers line up back under their umbrella so they begun to put together a plan that would see Marvel studios pull in over $7 Billion over the next 7 years.

Iron Man was its first release back in 2008, not such a well-known character compared to some of its other characters like Spiderman or the Hulk, but the movie went to pull in $585 million internationally and going on to be the biggest franchise of them all racking in a total of  $2.4Billion over the 3 films with Iron Man 2 and 3 being released in 2010 and 2013.

Next to be released would the Asgardian god of thunder ‘Thor’, released in  2011  took in $449 million in global box office sales, not performing quite as well as what the release of the Iron man Movie had done, on a $150 million budget still bringing in nearly $300 million for the studio, and then going on to bring in $644 Million for Thor ‘The Dark World in 2013.

At the time releasing 1 Comic book movie in a year was not always going to be a guaranteed success, let alone 2 but Marvel took the plunge and followed up Thor with Captain America: The First Avenger 2 months after the first Thor movie,  which brought in a respectable $370 million, 2014 then saw The Winter Soldier released which added a further $454 Million to Marvels already bulging bank balances.

After the foundations had been set it was now time for Marvel Studios to bring their characters together, with The Avengers Movie.  The icing on the cake so to speak, in 2012 the movie was released with Marvel entering into the Top 5 grossing movies of all time with a global box office return of  $1.5 Billion, with only Titanic and Avatar both grossing more.

Guardians of the Galaxy last year went on to pull in another $774million for the juggernaut that is marvel Studios.

Avengers Age of Ultron opened recently in 44 markets for its first weekend taking in $201 million, surpassing what both the Avengers and Iron ‘Man took in its first week with worldwide box office receipts standing at $1.39 Billion although the movie was a success it did not surpass its predecessor the Avengers.

Ant Man opened on July 17th and took in $336 million worldwide which to date is its worse performing release, but still made a profit of  $200 million after spending $130 million to produce.

But whats next, April 2016 will see the third Captain America Movie along with Doctor Strange scheduled for release in November.  Guardians of the Galaxy 2  will follow on May 5th 2017,  the new Spiderman movie with Marvel will be released on July 28th 2017 with Thor: Ragnarok (Tom Hiddleston will be back as Loki) coming out on November 3rd 2017.

The latest we now have is that Avengers Infinity Part I will be released on May 4th 2018 with the possibility of Spiderman entering the mix after Sony and Marvels deal.

Black Panther will be released on July 6th 2016, with Captain Marvel hitting cinemas November 2nd 2018.   May 3rd 2019: Avengers: Infinity War Part II wiht the final movie currently scheduled to be Inhumans scheduled July 12th 2019.
