Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It, Getting On), Alexandra Roach (The Iron Lady, Utopia) and Elaine Cassidy (The Paradise, Harper’s Island) have been cast in Channel 4′s police procedural series No Offence.

No Offence is set in a crumbling cop shop on the wrong side of Manchester and tells the story of a group of police officers on the front line who go above and beyond to being the criminal element to justice. These officers test the biggest challenge yet when they discover that there is a serial killer on the loose.

Joanna Scanlan has been cast as Detective Inspector Vivienne Deering, the capable yet unhinged officer in charge of this group of cops; Alexandra Roach has been cast as Joy Freers, who has recently been promoted to the rank of Detective Sergeant; while Elaine Cassidy will play Detective Constable Dinah Kowalska, who is described as “compassionate but impulsive”.

The drama series was created by Paul Abbott, marking a reunion between Channel 4 and the writer who created their critical hit Shameless. Abbott’s production company Abbott Vision is producing No Offence, which has received an order for 8 episodes; consisting of one 75 minute episode and seven 60 minute episodes. The executive producers are Paul Abbott and Martin Carr. David Kerr and Catherine Morshead are attached to direct.

“No Offence is a precinct cop drama. It’s also one of the funniest things I’ve ever been allowed to put together”, said series creator and executive producer Paul Abbott. “It doesn’t look like anything else. No Offence’s cake mix is as bipolar as they get – it lurches from jet black laugh-out-loud, into fragile material on the turn of a sixpence. Writing three strong female leads is one thing. Writing women that men would choose as leaders has been particularly satisfying.”

The cast will be rounded out by Colin Salmon (Arrow, 24: Live Another Day), Will Mellor (Dates, Broadchurch) and Paul Ritter (Friday Night Dinner, Vera).
