It was only a few weeks ago that the cast was confirmed for the rebooted Ghostbusters franchise, but it seems that the backlash to the lead roles being female has meant another movie is also in the works.

It had been previously speculated that Channing Tatum was in talks to join the cast of the Ghostbusters movie, but then it was announced that the lead roles would be entirely female nothing else was heard.

The current movie line up includes Paul Feig’ in the directors chair along with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

It now seems that Ghostbusters may be getting their own movie universe, with Sony Pictures having set up a subsidary called Ghostcorp whic is being run by orignal Chostbusters director, Ivan Reitman and previous Ghostbusters star and current writer Dan Ackroyd.

Sony apparently wants Tatum to also star in the film which could launch a new franchise concurrently with the all-female film. There is no word on how exactly the movies will cross-over but comments make it sound like they will be connected.

Ivan Reitman recently made a statement about the new project stating,

“We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July, 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

It may be that Sony are a little sworried about the success of the all lead Ghostbuster movie, but it may also indicate that they have huge hoped for it and are therefore alrady paving the way to expand on it.

Paul Feig GHOSTBUSTERS hits Cinemas on July 22, 2016.
