12 years a slave is the true story of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a black man who lived prior to the 1865  complete abolishment of slavery in the United states.

Deservingly this film was nominated for 10 BAFTA’s this week on a film that some have said is the best film made on the American  Slave trade. Solomon Northup, born a free man in New York city a state where Slavery had been abolished was kidnapped and sold to Plantation in Louisiana.   Taking you through the horrific traumatic living hell that not only this man faced but others at the time, from rape to beatings, murder and torture.

After being Kidnapped Solomon is then seen being sold at auction by his kidnappers and being purchased by Ford  (Benedict Cumberbatch), who although use slaves for his business is not the hardened type like some.  Unfortunately his foreman is not so forgiving and doesn’t take to kindly to Solomon’s educated way of speaking, which ends in confrontation when the foreman attempts to give him a whip Solomon fights back.   Ford is quick to sell Solomon knowing that his life is now at risk when he ends up on the Plantation owned by Edwin Epps ( Micheal Fassbender) a cruel predominant man.

Through the time spent here we get to see the full extent of how exactly African-American men were viewed and treated, how the women were raped and man handled in the most stomach churning manner.

This biographical story is a tear jerking insight into a world not so Long ago. Director Steve McQueen has been able to capture the emotion and the brutality in a way that will have you leaving the film in disbelief that this was really what went on.

With out standing performances from both Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender, this throught provoking film tells the unbelievable true story both excellently and sympathetically.
